Goethe was a prominent writer and politician born in Frankfurt in late August of 1749. His body of work includes four novels, epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of styles. More than 10,000 letters and 3,000 drawings. He was very prominent in literary and scientific fields, such as color theory, morphology, and geology.
By the time of his death, he had the largest mineral library in all of Europe, around 17,800 rocks, and even had one (iron oxide) named after him, Goethite.
He, unlike just about everyone in the 1700s around central Europe, did not believe in christianity. He described himself as "not anti-Christian, not un-Christian, but most decidedly non-Christian.", later in his life he listed four things he did not like being "tobacco smoke, bugs and garlic and the cross" though he did describe christianity as the ultimate religion. In his later life he moved his interests to literature, survived a nearly fatal heart attack, and fell in love with a girl, to whom he never proposed, then in 1832, he died.
